At three in the morning on 16 June 1735 a tired 28-year-old Swede stepped off a boat at the Vischpoort. Carl Linnaeus defended his thesis on 23 June and was back on a boat to Amsterdam the next morning with a diploma, a gold ring and a silk cap.
